VACCINES
Taking the HPV vaccine if i'm over 26
You can take the HPV vaccine even if you are over 26, up until you are 45. It is generally not recommended because most individuals may already have been exposed to HPV past the age of 26. Once you have been exposed to HPV, the vaccine is less effective. You can always discuss with your doctor if you are unsure whether you need the vaccine or not.
HPV vaccine for males
The HPV vaccine can be taken by both males and females from ages 11-26.
How often do we need the flu vaccine?
The flu vaccine should be taken once a year, as the vaccine is different every year.
HEALTH SCREENINGS
Pap smears test
A pap smear should be done if you are aged 20-65 and sexually active. You should test every year for the first two years. If your results are negative both times, after that you only need to test once every three years. If you are positive, your doctor will guide you on what to do.
Mammograms test
A mammogram should be done every two years if you are aged 50-74. If someone in your family has had breast cancer, then you should start testing from age 40.
Prostate test
A prostate test should be done if you are aged 50 and more. Your doctor will advise you on how often do you need to test based on your results.
COMMON ALLMENTS
Cold vs flu
The flu is generally more serious than the common cold. Compared to the common cold, symptoms of flu appear very quickly. Symptoms such as a high fever, headache and fatigue are more likely to occur when you have the flu.
What to do when you have diarrhea
Hydration is important when you have diarrhea. Drink more water to replace the fluids that your body lost. Remember to avoid dairy products, oily foods, and caffeine. If you become severely dehydrated or experience diarrhea for more than two days, see a doctor.
When should you see a doctor for fever
The normal body temperature is between 36.5ºC-37.5ºC. If your temperature goes up to 38ºC and does not improve, then you should see a doctor.
PHARMACY
MEDICINES
Does paracetamol stay in the body?
Paracetamol generally will not stay in the body for more than 24 hours. Remember that it is important to stick to the recommended dose (no more than 8 tablets in 24 hours).
Generic (other brand) and original medicines
generic medicines and original medicine contain the same active ingredient, which means they have the same function. Some people are concerned that generic medicines are not as good as original medicines in terms of quality and safety, especially since the price differs greatly between generic and original medicines. There is no need to worry about this, as any registered generic medicine sold in Malaysia have already passed the standards required by Drug Control Authority.
Are antibiotics needed for cold/flu?
Antibiotics are medicines that target bacteria, whereas antivirals are medicines that target viruses. Since the common cold or flu is generally caused by viruses, therefore taking antibiotics for a common cold or flu will not help you recover faster.
OVER-THE-COUNTER
Too much vitamins is not good for you
Did you know that there is a daily maximum intake for vitamins? That is because too much vitamins can harm your health. Always check what is the daily maximum intake for the vitamin you are taking. If you are not sure, you can consult a pharmacist. Keep in mind that children and adults have a different maximum intake as well.
PHYSIO
Physiotherapy is not just a massage
Many people have the misconception that physiotherapy is just a massage to make you feel better. That is not true. Physiotherapy is a treatment that uses movement, exercise and manual therapy to help you recover from your injuries. In addition, physiotherapy can help you manage your pain and reduce the risk of future recurrences.
HOME CARE
Do you need a nurse or a caregiver?
Choosing between a nurse or a caregiver will depend on your needs. Nurses typically have a license and are trained in medical procedures such as catheterization, CPR, and others. On the other hand, a caregiver may be more suitable if you are only looking for help with daily activities like bathing. If you are unsure, just call us any day and we will give you a hand.
DIETITIAN
Dietitian and nutritionists: different but overlapping
Dietitians and nutritionists share some similarities, but also have their differences. While both dietitians and nutritionists are able to advise you on practising a healthy diet, dietitians focus on diets affected by diseases such as diabetes, whereas nutritionists work with healthy individuals.
